Easter Bonus calculation in Greece is governed by strict rules defined by legislation (K.Y.A. 19040/1981) and applies to all salaried employees in the private sector. The bonus period runs from January 1 to April 30 (120 days). If you worked the full period, you're entitled to half a month's salary (if paid by salary) or 15 daily wages (if paid by daily wage). For partial periods, the calculation is proportional: 1/15 of half the monthly salary for every 8 calendar days of employment (for salaried employees) or 1 daily wage for every 8 calendar days (for daily wage earners). Complete Guide to Easter Bonus Calculation Rules
Easter Bonus calculation in Greece is governed by strict rules defined by legislation (K.Y.A. 19040/1981) and applies to all salaried employees in the private sector. Here's a comprehensive guide to know exactly what you're entitled to.
1. The Basic Time Period
Easter Bonus is not calculated for the entire year, but for a specific time period: From January 1 to April 30. If you worked the entire period (120 days), you're entitled to half a month's salary (if paid by salary) or 15 daily wages (if paid by daily wage).
2. How is it calculated if you didn't work the full quarter?
If your employment relationship lasted less than the above period, you receive a proportional amount: For salaried employees: 1/15 of half the monthly salary for every 8 calendar days of employment. For daily wage earners: 1 daily wage for every 8 calendar days worked.
3. Parameters that 'inflate' the Bonus
The calculation is not only based on the base salary, but on regular earnings. These include: The salary or daily wage paid on the 15th day before Easter. Vacation allowance: A coefficient of 0.04166 is always added to the Bonus amount. Additional benefits: Overtime, legal overtime (if done regularly), allowances (position, unhealthy conditions, children, etc.), and even the value of meals if provided regularly.
Salaried: (Gross Salary / 2) × (Days / 120) × 1.04166. Daily-paid: (Daily Wage × 15) × (Days / 120) × 1.04166
4. What applies to leaves and illnesses?
Leaves: The time of annual regular leave is calculated normally as if you were working. Illness: Only days for which you received illness benefits from the insurance provider (e.g., e-EFKA) are deducted. The first 3 days of illness (paid by the employer) are calculated normally. Strike/Unpaid leave: These periods are deducted from the bonus calculation time.
5. Legislation and Deadlines
Payment deadline: Easter Bonus must be paid no later than Holy Wednesday. The employer can pay it earlier, but never later. Payment form: It must be paid in cash and not in kind (e.g., gift vouchers). Penalties: Failure to pay the bonus constitutes a criminal offense and the process of flagrante delicto is available to employees through a complaint to the Labor Inspectorate.
